Headhunter: Hilarious Hires from History 1st Ed. was originally created and published in 2018, without a retail release. Only 13 copies were printed, featuring 2 different box designs and 250 cards, though the printed copies only had 108 cards. Original games were used for early playtesting and for reviewers. Early into the original Kickstarter campaign for the 1st Edition, private investments covered the project. Instead of going forward with printing the game, Legends of Ravenhall decided to instead seek additional funding to upgrade the game, which was successful, creating the 2nd Edition.
